The Hotel Paisano was built by Charles Bassett of El Paso and opened in June 1930. He commissioned notable architect Henry Trost of Trost and Trost in El Paso for the architectural design.
In 1955 Warner Brothers chose Marfa as the location for the filming of the epic movie Giant. In June of that year the cast and crew including James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson made the hotel their headquarters. Today, the hotel still has many visitors that come to see and remember Giant.
The hotel offers a banquet room that seats 100, full-service bar, and private meeting and conference area. Also, an outdoor, covered swimming pool (heated from late April through early October), shopping and a "Giant" memorabilia room with the movie playing continuously. For anyone traveling on State or Federal business government rates are available Sunday through Thursday.

A locally run hotel since 1959, Bob Harris of Lake Flato Architects reinvigorated the Thunderbird's classic "50's horseshoe shape and interior courtyard for its 2005 reopening. The renovation transformed the structure into a model of modern design and livability while maintaining the original hotel's bygone feeling. The Thunderbird is everything a small hotel should be, providing privacy, hospitality and stylishness without pretension. With its pool and pale blue exterior reflecting the desert sky.
